Celebrating Matariki

Today our Middle Team celebrated Matariki.
Matariki is the Maori New Year celebration.

On Thursday we peeled our vegetables. On Friday morning the hangi was cooked and we had our kai for lunch on Friday.
We had a hangi, weaved flax flowers and created a 'Matatriki Stars' piece of art work.

Here are some photos of our celebration...

Do you celebrate Matariki? If so, how do you celebrate?

Fifa World Cup and Room 7

In our classroom we have been making connections with the skills and attitudes that the Fifa World Cup soccer players have, and need to have, to ourselves.

 Here are the similarities:

We BOTH.....

  • show resilience (not giving up) when things get hard (our learning and their soccer games)
  • team work
  • helping others
  • learning from mistakes
  • learning new skills and practicing our learnt skills
  • making new friends and maintaining positive relationships
Can you add anything else to our list? We would love your comments.

Room7 wrap free Wednesday

Today we had 12 children wrap free. That is 50 percent of our class wrap free!

Snail Mail

Today is Snail mail day!

We have all written a letter to someone. We learnt how to write an informal letter in class. We have chosen to write to a family member or a friend we haven't seen for a while.
Here we are with our letters ready to post! Some of our letters are going to USA, Spain and Fiji, but mostly around NZ.

Cinquain Poetry

Today we wrote a cinquain  poem about Frost.

Frost
sparkly, icy
shimmering, slipping, freezing
frozen fingers and toes

Ice

Poem

It was a very cold morning this morning! We thought we would write a poem about it. As a class we all contributed our ideas to write a class poem.

One Frosty Morning
Beautiful frosty icicles in the shape of silver ferns,
Making sparkling crystals on the ground.
Icy leaves dangling from bare trees.
Crunchy, icy grass beneath my feet,
Feels like cold, hard, icy snow.
As slippery as frozen ice on an ice rink.
Dripping water down frosty trees.
Looks like a white blanket covering the shivering grass.

What do you like about our poem?

Collaborative Planning with our buddies in Wisconsin

We are learning to plan, write and collaborative on a narrative story with our buddies from Wisconsin.

This morning we worked on our planning templates on google docs. We have been commenting on google docs with our buddy from Wisconsin about which picture prompt to we should use, asking them questions and getting ideas from each other about what to plan.

We are continuing to plan our writing this week and then we move onto writing our stories together on google docs. We use a different colour to our buddy so we know who wrote which part. We can't wait to  hear feedback from our buddy tomorrow about what they think so far of our planning!

Here are the Mysteries of Harris Burdick that we are are basing our collaborative writing project around.

Google Hangout with Wisconsin

This morning most of us came to school at 8am to have a Google Hangout with a class of students from Wisconsin USA. They are a class of 11 and 12 year olds that attend Pulaski Community Middle school. It was 3pm on Wednesday for them and 8am on Thursday for us!

We are working together on a writing project using google docs. This morning we met our writing buddies and said hello.

We are using the Mystery of Harris Burdick and choosing a picture prompt to write a story together collaboratively.

Kids Cafe

Schools around NZ, and hopefully others from around the world, will be taking part in Kids Cafe.

Here is the Kids Cafe Blog where everyone's lessons will be added.

I wonder what you will teach others?

How will you record your lessons?

I wonder what you will learn from others?

Update on our Dissolving Chalk Experiment

Poppy, Masyn and L:ucy found out that the three liquids (water, lemon juice and vinegar) are slowly dissolving the chalk.

The lemon juice and vinegar have acid in them and they are dissolving the chalk. The water does not have any acid so it is just soaking up some of the water.
